Study & Research Visa – Latvia

Overview

The Latvia Study & Research Visa is designed for third-country nationals who intend to pursue academic or scientific work in Latvia. This includes university or institutional study programmes, post-study extensions, and collaborative research initiatives. Applicants must apply under the correct category based on their purpose of stay.

Applicants must choose the appropriate route based on their academic or research activity. Requirements differ for each route and must be strictly followed.

Eligible Categories

You may apply for a Study & Research Visa if you are:

  • Enrolled in an accredited university or higher education programme in Latvia
  • Studying at an accredited educational institution
  • graduate or researcher seeking to stay after completion of studies or a project
  • Involved in mutual scientific cooperation between Latvian and international institutions

  • Standard: 30 calendar days
  • Priority: 10 working days
  • Express: 5 working days

Documents Required

All applicants must ensure documents are recent (within 30 days) and presented in originals with photocopies. Incomplete applications may result in delays.

Standard Documentation (All Categories)

Visa Application Form

  • Completed, printed, and signed.

Photograph

  • One recent colour photograph (3×4 cm).

Travel Document

  • Valid passport with copies of all pages with entries or tags.
  • Certified by the applicant (copy correct, number of pages, surname, date, signature).

UK Residency

  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Criminal Record Certificate

  • Required if the applicant has resided in their home or citizenship country for more than 12 months.

State Fee Payment Receipt

  • Document confirming payment of the visa processing fee.

Additional Questionnaire

  • Required for citizens of Russia, Belarus, or nationals under enhanced scrutiny.

Category-Specific Supporting Documentation

Studies in Accredited University or Educational Institution

  • Study Agreement: Signed contract with the Latvian education provider
  • Invitation: Approved by the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA), not older than 6 months
  • Proof of Financial Means:
    • Minimum of €620 per month, supported by:
      • Bank statements for the last 3 months
      • OR notarised declaration of sponsorship and sponsor’s proof of income/employment
      • OR university-issued statement of available funds in a student account
  • Proof of Accommodation: Hotel booking, rental agreement, or university accommodation
  • Proof of Previous Education: Diplomas, transcripts, and mark sheets
  • Travel Medical Insurance: Minimum coverage of €42,600 valid for 90 days from entry
  • Flight Itinerary: Ticket for first entry to Latvia
  • Visa Fee: €60 (waived for Master’s and PhD students)

Post-Study or Research Project Completion

  • Diploma from a recognised higher education institution in Latvia
  • Certificate from a research institution confirming successful project completion
  • Proof of Financial Means: Minimum of €740 per month

  • Letter of Collaboration or formal agreement between Latvian and foreign research bodies
  • Proof of Financial Means: Minimum of €740 per month

Important Notes

  • All non-English, Latvian, or Russian documents must be translated by a certified UK translator.
  • Minors must provide parental consent and custody documentation, if applicable.
  • Applicants must follow the correct route for their academic or research purpose to avoid refusal or delays.
  • The embassy may request additional documentation or interview as part of the application process.

Photo Specifications

Applicants must provide one recent colour photograph, taken within the last 6 months, meeting the following requirements:

Background

  • Light-coloured background (white or off-white)
  • Facial features must be clearly distinguishable with good contrast

Quality & Composition

  • High-resolution and in clear focus
  • Full face visible, with a neutral expression (no smiling)
  • No sunglasses, hats, or head coverings
    • Exceptions made only for religious or cultural reasons

Format

  • Printed on standard photographic paper (camera print only)
  • Photograph must be paper clipped to the visa application form (do not glue or staple)

Important

  • If the photograph does not meet the above standards, the application will be considered incomplete
  • Applicants may be required to take new photos at the visa application centre’s photo booth
